Stay in Touch with Rams Connected
Graduating seniors—you did it! As you gear up for the VCU School of Engineering diploma ceremony Friday and commencement on Saturday, one great way to participate as a new member of the Ram alumni family is to sign up as a Rams Connected mentor. Your name will be listed in an internal database that students can search and they can contact you as needed. Returning students: check out the database. Why? The best way to learn about a specific organization or career field is to talk to people who are already there.

UROP Announces Fellows; Outstanding Faculty Mentor
A large group of student researchers from the VCU School of Engineering has been awarded summer fellowships through VCU’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). The group includes students in biomedical engineering and computer science. In addition, two students from other disciplines are completing fellowships alongside VCU Engineering faculty mentors. Experts agree that the School of Engineering produces outstanding faculty mentors: Sevag Gharibian, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, has won a VCU UROP Outstanding Faculty Mentor award.

Symposium Award
Engineering Student Wins Graduate Symposium Award
Shani Levit, a doctoral student under Christina Tang, Ph.D., in the Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering, tied for second place at VCU’s recent 20th annual Graduate Student Research Symposium. The symposium showcased projects from more than 70 researchers from fields across multiple disciplines in the sciences, arts and humanities throughout the university. Levit’s project is titled “Electrospinning to extend shelf-life and stability of nanomedicines.” The work of mechanical and nuclear engineering graduate student Karthik Mummidisetti earned a spotlight in a feature about the symposium.

Winning Brew
A Winning Brew: First Alumni Scholarship
Julia and Nicholas Cain (’01), two VCU School of Engineering alumni who helped to build one of the nation’s most influential craft brewing businesses, have established a scholarship for chemical engineering undergraduates. The Julia and Nicholas Cain Scholarship is the school’s first scholarship endowed by VCU Engineering alumni. The school is where the couple met and where their professional journey began.
