Biomedical Engineering at VCU

Welcome to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. Our department is located on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus, VCU Medical Center, Virginia Biotechnology Research Park and the Institute of Engineering and Medicine.

The BME undergraduate program prepares students to make important contributions to biomedical sciences and engineering including health care, technological development, basic research, and industry. Undergraduates are exposed to hands on research in faculty labs as early as their freshman year. Our exciting senior design program provides training in being an entrepreneur and working in teams. Our goal is to help students discover where they want to go and to make sure they get there. Undergraduates in our program enroll in one of four tracks:

  • Biomechanics and Biomaterials Track
  • Instrumentation and Electronics Track
  • Pre-Med Track
  • Rehabilitation Engineering Track

The BME Graduate Program offers both the Masters and Ph.D. degree and prepares students for rewarding careers in several settings including academia, industry, government, patent law, private foundations etc. Graduate students complete research in the laboratories of outstanding, well-funded faculty in areas including:

  • Biomaterials
  • Cell and Tissue Engineering
  • Computational Medicine
  • Haptics
  • Mechanobiology of Disease
  • Medical Devices
  • Mind-machine Interface
  • Nanotechnology
  • Neuro and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics
  • Rehabilitation Engineering
  • Skeletal Biology and Engineering
