Electrical and Computer Thursday
In the Photonics and Optics Laboratory in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, researchers investigate nanophotonics — manipulating light at the nanoscale, and intense light pulses in materials, or nonlinear optics. Assistant Professor Nathaniel Kinsey, Ph.D., and Ümit Özgür, Ph.D., Qimonda Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director of the department, explain.
The VCU School of Engineering is expanding its curriculum and resources to prepare students for a critical workforce need: automation and controls engineering. A gift from Rockwell Automation has provided classroom workstations to support instruction in this key area.
Fahad Saif Harhara, Ph.D., who earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in 2000 as part of the school’s first graduating class, was named the VCU School of Engineering Alumni Star for 2017.
Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, Ph.D., Commonwealth Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the University Award of Excellence. The annual award for superior teaching, scholarship and service is among the highest honors the university can bestow.
Computer engineering major Erwin Karincic has received a SANS Institute’s CyberStart 2017 Scholarship, one of the region’s most competitive awards. Karincic placed third among the nearly 4,000 students from Virginia and six other states competing in the scholarship challenge.
