Gary C. Tepper, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM).

Tepper, whose research focuses on advanced functional materials, is the first Virginia Commonwealth University faculty member to be named an IAAM Fellow. This status is awarded to a researcher or scientist who has made original and significant research contributions to the fields of materials science, engineering and technology.

As an IAAM Fellow, he presented “Supercritical CO2-Assisted Crystallization of Perovskite Films” on October 19, 2019, in Stockholm, Sweden. His lecture presented a new, patent-pending method for producing perovskite-based solar cells. Perovskite solar cells are among the most promising renewable energy sources.

Tepper holds 7 U.S. patents and is author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications on topics including radiation detection, chemical and biological sensing, air filtration and photovoltaics. He  joined VCU Engineering in 1997 and became chair of its mechanical engineering department in 2009. He was instrumental in the creation of the college’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear engineering and establishing its combined doctorate in mechanical and nuclear engineering, the only such Ph.D. program in the U.S.

“I am honored to be elected an IAAM Fellow and have enjoyed developing many new collaborations through my affiliation with this organization,” Tepper said.
