Cody Wiggins, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in VCU’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, has been selected to present a webinar for the Gen IV International Forum webinar series. The webinar will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Wiggins earned the opportunity to deliver this presentation because he won the Pitch Your Ph.D. competition at the 2019 American Nuclear Society winter meeting.

This webinar series features speakers from around the world addressing topics related to GEN IV reactor systems. These systems are currently under development and are expected to offer improved safety, sustainability, efficiency and cost over other reactor designs.

Wiggins’ webinar discusses positron emission particle tracking, an emerging method for studying flows in reactor systems. It will present information on how this method may be used in pipes, heat exchangers, pebble beds and other systems. It will also address how it contributes to a better understanding of flow phenomena and validation of the computational fluid dynamics models being used in next-generation reactor design.

Wiggins is a member of VCU Engineering’s Fluids in Advanced Systems and Technology (FAST) Lab, directed by Lane Carasik, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering.
