Tien Comlekoglu, a junior biomedical engineering major in VCU’s School of Engineering, won a top poster award at a recent international meeting of the Biophysical Society.

Comlekoglu said he studied "the effects of memory on the electrical behavior of cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) using a computational model of a cardiomyocyte." His poster demonstrated the research progress he made over the previous semester working in the Computational Physiology Lab with Seth Weinberg, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Weinberg noted, “Winning an Undergraduate Poster Award at a large international meeting like the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting is really an exceptional honor.”

The awards for best undergraduate posters were presented at the conference, held Feb. 11-15 in New Orleans. They were judged on the quality of the student’s research, knowledge of the research problem, contribution to the project and overall presentation and scientific merit of the poster. The Biophysical Society brings together leading scientists from around the world who work at the interface of the life, physical and computational sciences.
