Assistant professor receives 2019 Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine

Golshahi Young Investigator Award

Laleh Golshahi, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, has received the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) Young Investigator Award for 2019. The award is given to a scientist younger than 40 who has made significant contributions to the field of aerosols in medicine. It was presented at the 2019 ISAM Congress held in Montreux, Switzerland, May 25-29, 2019.

Golshahi specializes in aerosol science for respiratory support, diagnosis and inhalation therapy, with a focus on pediatric patients. Her research addresses particle deposition in children and infants. Because this research cannot be easily done in vivo, there are limited in-vivo data on aerosol deposition in children’s airways. Golshahi’s work to correlate in-vitro and in-vivo pediatric aerosol therapy research has therefore resulted in important contributions to the multidisciplinary area of aerosol medicine and pulmonary drug delivery.

Golshahi has authored 29 peer-reviewed publications, including an Aerosol Research Letter that describes an idealized child mouth-throat model for standardized testing of aerosol medicine delivery devices for the first time. Her work has received multiple honors including the VCU Presidential Research Quest Award in 2017.

“Being recognized by the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine is a great honor — and a pat on the back to keep going and live up to this vote of confidence from scholars I so admire,” she said.
