Virginia Commonwealth University’s newest students — all 6,000 of them — are settling into their first semester on campus. VCU News caught up with seven as they begin classes and build their routines.

Here’s one of them:

Logan Schorr

Hometown: Glen Allen, Virginia

School: College of Engineering

In some ways, Schorr had a typical summer heading into his first year of college. He spent time with friends and researched his classes. He prepared to move into his residence hall.

“I've run to Walmart so many times just getting everything I needed,” Schorr said.

However, the past few months also have been atypical. Schorr, an aspiring mechanical engineer, was recruited in late spring to join Hyperloop at VCU, a team of engineering, business, government and arts students vying to create the best pod for Hyperloop, the high-speed ground transport concept by SpaceX founder Elon Musk. Schorr, who attended high school with several VCU Hyperloop members and has a background in robotics, helped the team in its run to the Hyperloop finals at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

“I remember transitioning into Hyperloop was very smooth because it was an environment I was already used to," he said of machining parts for the pod. “And touring SpaceX was amazing."

Now back in Richmond and settling into his first year at VCU, Schorr said he is looking forward to starting his engineering classes and joining a few student organizations.

“There are a couple I'm looking to be part of, especially the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,” he said. “And definitely Hyperloop.”
