Forrest Baber, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, won second place in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student poster competition. The competition took place Nov. 13, 2019, during the ASME 2019 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Salt Lake City, Utah.

His research adviser is Ibrahim Guven, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering.

Baber’s poster addressed the development of new simulation approaches for predicting the mechanical behavior of carbon nanotube yarn-reinforced polymer composites. This work, funded by the Institute for Ultra-Strong Composites by Computational Design (US-COMP), a NASA Space Technology Research Institute, seeks to help create the next generation of lightweight structural materials for deep space exploration.

“I am truly honored to be recognized for this work, and it could not have been accomplished without my collaborators in the US-COMP institute and my adviser Dr. Ibrahim Guven,” Baber said. “It is an exciting time to be involved in aerospace research and I am very hopeful our continued work can help the community.”
