Hunter Andrews and Dimitris Killinger, both doctoral students in VCU’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, received top honors in the student poster session, at the 2018 American Nuclear Society Winter Meeting and Nuclear Technology Expo. Andrews and Killinger are advisees of Supathorn Phongikaroon, Ph.D., associate professor and director of nuclear programs.

Andrews won Best Poster in Fuel Cycle and Waste Management.

“Being recognized for the work I am doing to progress the material management for used nuclear fuel is a nice reminder of the importance of the research done in the Molten Salt Research Group here at VCU,” he said.

Killinger won Best Poster in Materials Science and Technology.

“My poster investigated the morphology of uranium from electrochemical separation in molten salts for the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel,” he said. “The people you surround yourself with are just as important as the research you’re doing for your degree. I want to thank Dr. Phongikaroon, [fellow Ph.D. student] Sarah Morgan and my lab mates in the Molten Salt Research Group. They are pretty much my second family, and I would not be here if it weren’t for them."
