Niels Asmussen receives Young Investigator Award

Virginia Commonwealth University doctoral student Niels Asmussen won a Young Investigator Award at the 13th International Conference on the Chemistry and Biology of Mineralized Tissues. Asmussen is a member of the Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Research and Innovation directed by Barbara D. Boyan, Ph.D., the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin, Jr. Dean of VCU College of Engineering.

Asmussen, who gave a presentation titled “Matrix vesicle microRNAs regulate growth plate chondrocyte proliferation and maturation,” is pursuing a Ph.D. in VCU’s Integrative Life Sciences Ph.D. program, which is housed in the VCU Center for Life Sciences Education.

The award will help Asmussen offset the cost of attending the conference, which was held Oct. 20-25, 2019, in Montebello, Quebec, Canada.

“It was exciting to attend the ICCBMT conference and meet a lot of people studying tissue mineralization,” he said.
