Two VCU Engineering faculty named fellows of American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

Henry J. Donahue, Ph.D., the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin Jr. Professor and Distinguished Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

Donahue joins Barbara D. Boyan, Ph.D., the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin Jr. Dean of VCU College of Engineering, who was previously elected an ASBMR fellow.

ASBMR is an international professional, scientific and medical society that brings together 4,000 clinical and experimental scientists involved in the study of bone and mineral metabolism. Nominated and selected by their peers, fellows are recognized for making outstanding contributions to the field of bone and mineral science.

Donahue’s research focuses on understanding the mechanism by which bone and muscle adapt to their mechanical environment; effects of space flight on musculoskeletal tissues; and exploiting biophysical signals to develop strategies to regenerate musculoskeletal tissue.

Boyan’s research covers all aspects of bone and cartilage biology. Her recent research developments include novel technologies for controlling nanotexture on metal and polymer surfaces in order to study cell responses for regenerative medicine applications as well as elucidating the mechanisms used by steroid hormones like vitamin D and estrogen and microRNAs in the regulation of bone and cartilage cells. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, Boyan holds multiple patents and has co-founded several companies.
