Six finalist teams were selected from the U.S. to present their work at the 2018 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES 2018) Undergraduate Design Competition at the BMES annual meeting in Atlanta Oct. 17-20, 2018. Three of these teams are from VCU College of Engineering.

The teams presented their projects at the College of Engineering Capstone Design Expo in April 2018:

Increasing Chest Expansion Volume for Extremely Low Birthweight Babies

Pulmonary Nodule Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy Device Handle

Ariana DeCastro, Sarah Roberson, Chelsee Sales, Hanna Teshome

Faculty adviser Russell D. Jamison, Ph.D.

Sponsor: VCU Pediatrics

Pulmonary Nodule Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy Device Handle

Gabrielle Cotman, Alexandria Ritchie, Andy Vo, Rachel Waldo

Faculty adviser Rebecca L. Heise, Ph.D.

Sponsor: Boston Scientific

Microfluidic Chip for Testing Effects of Substrate Stiffness, Shear Stress and Chemotactic Gradient

Stark Gallagher, Laurel Kovalchick, Logan Petry

Faculty adviser Christopher A. Lemmon, Ph.D.

Dozens of VCU biomedical engineering undergraduate and graduate students are planning to attend the annual meeting with their faculty advisers to present their research. Also, several undergraduates from other universities will present work they did as participants in VCU Engineering’s summer research opportunity. The Department of Biomedical Engineering will give 13 oral presentations and present 42 posters, record numbers for the department.

Last year, a VCU Engineering team won first place in the BMES design competition.
