Your path to medical school
The academic prestige of biomedical engineering — and its focus on innovation — make it one of the best majors for aspiring physicians.
Great doctors don’t only know bench science. They are problem-solvers who rely heavily on state-of-the-art technology that is constantly evolving. Medical school admissions panels know this and value applicants with biomedical engineering degrees.
VCU’s best-known Guaranteed Admission Program is for medicine. The M.D. degree through the VCU School of Medicine offers a strong, innovative medical curriculum that emphasizes both academic study and compassionate patient care, preparing students for the challenges and complexities of medical practice. Guaranteed Admission students who successfully meet all of the requirements of the Guaranteed Admission Program may enter the School of Medicine without further competition.
VCU’s Department of Biomedical Engineering gives future doctors additional advantages:
- VCU Engineering has a close relationship with VCU Health System, Virginia’s largest university hospital.
- VCU has the state’s oldest and most comprehensive biomedical engineering department.
- VCU Engineering offers a pre-med curriculum and a Pre-Med Society for undergraduates.
- Biomedical engineering majors at VCU have opportunities to shadow doctors and other medical professionals at the VCU Health System.
- VCU’s biomedical engineering undergrads have access to professional MCAT test prep, at no charge, as well as workshops and personal feedback on interviewing, preparation of a curriculum vitae and writing an effective personal statement.
- VCU Engineering’s Pre-Med Society offers undergraduates opportunities to network with others who aim to go to medical school — or are already there.
- The Pre-Med Society’s seminar series gives biomedical engineering majors exclusive opportunities to learn from leaders in the medical field about career development, research and medical school admissions.
- VCU’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and School of Medicine also offer a dual M.D./Ph.D. program
