What is Handshake?

Handshake is the new recruiting platform for Virginia Commonwealth University students and alumni.  As an employer, you will be able to post job/internship listings, register for career fairs, manage your on-campus interviewing, and more!  Handshake also allows you to customize your profile and job listings to your liking.

How do I create an employer account in Handshake?

To create an employer account, begin by visiting app.joinhandshake.com and then selecting Sign up for an account. You will then be guided through the registration process (make sure to select “Employer” when prompted for the type of account you are creating).

How do I post an opportunity in Handshake?

  1. Make sure that you have submitted an approval request to the school where you would like to post a job.
  2. Start by selecting the Jobs tab on the left side of the navigation bar to bring up the Jobs Overview page.
  3. Next, select New Job in the upper right corner of the page.  After filling out as many of the fields as you can, select Create Job.
  4. You can then specify job qualifications to match the job with qualified students at the University.  Make sure to click Update Qualifications after completing this form.
  5. At the Job Summary page, you are able to see an overview of all of the information you just filled out for your job.  On the left side of the page you will see a Post to Schools dropdown menu. Make sure that Virginia Commonwealth University is selected.

How can I share information about my jobs and events with students?

  1. As long as you have posted a job to our school, students will be able to find it if the position is active.  Filling out as many fields as possible on the “Create a Job” form will help students find your job posting when searching for specific jobs.
  2. Contact Engineering Career Services to discuss a custom recruitment plan and branding opportunities. Engineering Career Services is happy to help you connect with our students in a variety of ways to help you receive more applications for your open opportunity.

Are there resume books in Handshake?

Yes, you can create resume books in Handshake.

  1. First, search for students by certain specifications by clicking on the “Students” tab on the left side of the navigation bar and using the options form to filter.
  2. After generating the list of students based on your search criteria, use the top checkbox to select each of these students.
  3. In the top right of the menu click “Bulk Actions” and select download application packages as a PDF or Zip file to have the packages sent you via email.

Note: You must have been granted permission by the University to search for students in order to generate resume books.

How can I get more applications for our current opportunity?

  1. When choosing the majors that can apply for the position, consider a wide range, as some programs cover similar information and skills.  Including more majors in your posting will allow more candidates to apply.
  2. Include as much detail as possible throughout the post. The more descriptive job postings tend to get more, and better qualified, applicants.
  3. Explain your application process. Candidates need to know how to apply for the position.

How do I request and manage an interview schedule in Handshake?

  1. Click Interviews on the left navigation bar
  2. Click the Request Interview Schedule tab in the upper right corner.
  3. Fill out the basics section of the form.
  4. Use the step-by-step buttons (or the Next button) at the bottom of the screen to move to the next step: Qualifications. Be sure to review the two qualification options.
  5. Click Timeline or Next at the bottom of the screen to move to the next step.
  6. Select Request
  7. Your interview schedule will now be sent to the university you selected in the Basics section. Depending on the permissions you have at the school, the interview will be automatically approved or it will go into a pending status at the university. You will be notified when your schedule has been approved or declined.

How do I manage my notifications and/or unsubscribe from emails?

  1. Log in to your Handshake account
  2. Click Profile at the top of the black sidebar on the left side of the page.
  3. On your profile page, click on the Account tab at the upper right-hand side.
  4. Select the option for Notification Preferences
  5. Modify your notification preferences.

What do I do if I need help with my Handshake Account? Who do I contact?

If you need help with your account, many answers to common questions can be found on Handshake’s website: support.joinhandshake.com . You can also launch a support ticket from this site. Please also feel free to reach out to Engineering Career Services by emailing engrcareers@vcu.edu.

How can I work with student groups?

Review the list of all College of Engineering student organizations and determine which groups to which you would like to connect. After selecting your groups, contact Engineering Career Services by emailing engrcareers@vcu.edu.

How can I connect with faculty?

When is the Career Fair?

What is the schedule for the day?

Where is the Career Fair?

The Engineering Career Fair will be held in the School of Engineering Qimonda Atrium and Snead Hall Atrium of the VCU School of Business, 401 West Main Street, Richmond, VA.

What’s included?

Light breakfast, lunch, parking, pre-event advertising, a 6’ x 2’ table and two chairs.

What are the special features of the event?

  • Career Fair Mobile App: In order to help students find companies that are interested in hiring their skill set, we have created the VCU Career Fair Plus mobile app. We encourage all employers to download the app to view where employer tables will be located, upcoming Career Fair prep events, and much more! The app is available in the Apple Store and Google Play for free!
  • Career Fair VIPs: We will grant a select group of elite students with the honor of being Career Fair VIPs.  In order to become a Career Fair VIP, students are required to attend several career workshops and develop a LinkedIn profile.  The VIPs will be granted entry into the Career Fair 30 minutes early.  Therefore, make sure you are set and ready at 9:30 am to network with these engineering all-stars!
  • On-campus interviews: We are happy to provide space within the School of Engineering for employers who would like to conduct on-campus interviews the day after the Career Fair, Thursday, February 14. If you are interested, please contact Tiffany Boggs by emailing boggsta@vcu.edu. Space is limited and reservations will be made on a first come, first served basis.
  • Live Tweeting: We will be live tweeting the happenings of the Career Fair! Make sure to follow along by using #EGRCF18.
  • Alumni Photo: Are you a VCU alum? Plan to join us at 9:15 on the day of the Career Fair for a special alumni photo!

How do I view and edit my career fair registration?

Click on the link that you received to register for the career fair.  Follow the instructions on the form to register for the fair. A step by step guide for registering can be found on Handshake’s Support Page. You can view your registration at any time by clicking the View Registration option (this also lets you know that your registration was successful). If you need to edit your registration, you must reach out to Engineering Career Services by emailing engrcareers@vcu.edu.

How many people can I bring?

You can bring as many attendees as you like and there is no additional fee for extra attendees. Keep in mind that we can only provide your table with two chairs due to fire safety reasons. If you did not list your attendees’ names when you registered online, then please send their name to Engineering Career Services at engrcareers@vcu.edu to ensure that they have lunch, name tags, etc.

Where do I park?

Detailed parking information will be provided in a separate email.

How big are the tables? How many chairs are available?

6 ft. x 2 ft. - You can bring a sign or a display; however, it needs to fit on your table or safely behind it. The tables are spaced fairly close to one another. Each table will have a tablecloth and a sign with your organization’s name on it. We can only provide 2 chairs per table due to fire safety reasons.

Can I send brochures and my display to you ahead of time?

Yes, if you would like to send those items before the event, please notify me by e-mail and send them no more than one week in advance to:

Can I leave my materials in Career Services and arrange pick-up afterwards?

It is our policy that employers may arrange a scheduled pick-up of their Career Fair materials. Our physical street address, phone & fax are above. We are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. Engineering Career Services can store your items until pickup, but cannot arrange shipping directly.
