VCU Engineering Professional Development

Flash mentoring

VCU College of Engineering invites alumni and friends in engineering and software development to join career conversations that prepare students for the professional world. With just a small time commitment, you can make a big impact by offering real-world insight into your field and helping students build their networking skills.

What's a career conversation?

A one-on-one informal conversation where students learn directly from professionals in the field they are interested in. It is not a job interview; it is a chance for students to ask questions and gain firsthand knowledge about a career, industry, or company.

Program details

Who you will meet:
Undergraduate engineering and computer science students enrolled in VCU’s Engineering Professional Development course, primarily sophomores and juniors.

What's your role:
Engage in one or more virtual career conversations per semester with our students. Each session is a 20-30 minute one-on-one conversation. Students will choose mentors on a first-come, first-served basis and coordinate directly with you to schedule. We provide structured conversation guides to help keep the discussion productive.

Where & when:

  • Where: All career conversations need to take place either by video call or in person.
  • When:  The student and mentor will coordinate to schedule the conversation, and it must occur sometime between October 6 and November 21.

Optional bonus:
Join us at our Career Connection Mixer in October, an in-person event to meet students you're connecting with virtually.
