Change your major

Students interested in declaring any major in the College of Engineering must first meet with an advisor in their preferred major to review eligibility requirements. To request a meeting, please email engradvise@vcu.edu and include your name, V#, and major of interest.

Major (concentration) Eligibility Requirements to Declare Major
Biomedical Engineering

VCU GPA of 3.0 or greater, with a minimum of 12 VCU credit hours earned. Completion of the following courses with grades of "B" or higher:

  • MATH 200
  • If attempted:
    • MATH 301, MATH 310, CHEM 101, CHEZ 101, PHYS 207

All must be completed in fewer than 56 VCU credit hours. These are the requirements for assured admission; however, Engineering reviews all applying students and considers admission to the major on a case by case basis.

Chemical & Life Science Engineering

VCU GPA of 3.0 or greater, with a minimum of 12 VCU credit hours earned. Completion of the following courses with grades of "B" or higher:

  • MATH 200, MATH 201
  • CHEM 101 or CLSE 101 or ENGR 101
  • If attempted:
    • MATH 200, MATH 201, MATH 301, MATH 307, PHYS 207, PHYS 208, CHEM 101, CHEM 102, CHEZ 101, and CHEZ 102

All attempted engineering courses must be completed with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Computer Science (Bachelor of Science)

A minimum of 12 earned VCU credit hours and a VCU GPA of 2.5 or greater is required to change into the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Completion of the following courses with grades "C" or higher:

  • MATH 151
  • CMSC 254 or CMSC 210
  • CMSC 255, CMSC 256, CMSC 302
Computer Science (Bachelor of Arts)

A minimum of 12 earned VCU credit hours and a VCU GPA of 2.0 or greater is required to change into the Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science. Completion of the following course with grades of "C" or higher:

  • MATH 151
  • CMSC 254 or CMSC 210
  • CMSC 255
Electrical Engineering

VCU GPA of 3.0 or greater, with a minimum of 12 VCU credit hours earned. Completion of the following courses with grades of "B" or higher:

  • MATH 200, MATH 201
  • PHYS 207 or EGRE 101 or ENGR 101
  • If attempted:
    • MATH 200, MATH 201, MATH 211, MATH 301, MATH 307, PHYS 207, PHYS 208, CHEM 101, CHEM 102

GPA for all attempted engineering and computer science courses must be 3.0 or greater.

Computer Engineering

VCU GPA of 3.0 or greater, with a minimum of 12 VCU credit hours earned. Completion of the following courses with grades of "B" or higher:

  • MATH 200, MATH 201
  • PHYS 207 or EGRE 101 or ENGR 101
  • If attempted:
    • MATH 200, MATH 201, MATH 211, MATH 301, MATH 307, PHYS 207, PHYS 208, CHEM 101, CHEM 102

GPA for all attempted engineering and computer science courses must be 3.0 or greater.

Mechanical Engineering

VCU GPA of 3.0 or greater, with a minimum of 12 VCU credit hours earned. Completion of the following courses with a GPA of 3.0 or greater:

  • MATH 200, MATH 201
  • PHYS 207
  • CHEM 101
