Advising

While earning your degree, you will receive advising from many inspiring and committed faculty. Below are responsibilities for different types of faculty advisors you may engage with:

  • Graduate Program Director – A designated faculty member for each program who serves as a resource from admission to graduation, and acts as the main advisor for non-thesis master’s students.
  • Research Advisor – A faculty member assigned to M.S. with thesis and Ph.D. students whose responsibilities are to guide a student’s development in academics, research, publishing, and professionalism.
  • Advisory Committee – Appointed after a research advisor is identified for M.S. with thesis and Ph.D. students. An advisory committee acts as an examining body and source of general counsel for a student.
  • VCU Bulletin – The university’s official administrative resource for admission criteria, degree or academic program requirements, policies, course descriptions, and more.
